I heard Francis Schaeffer on Fresh Air. I thought he was very insightful. He said that he had converted to Greek Orthodoxy to remain connected with the church in some way. His reasons for Orthodoxy were quite revealing. He said that he prefered Orthodoxy because of the prestige of its ancient rites and that Orthodoxy did not rely on the personal charisma of the celebrant. Those are good reasons. They make sense for Shaeeffer because, as he told Terry Gross in the interview, he could not imagine not believing in God. But what about the rest of us, more radical Christians who do not believe in God anymore? Where are we supposed to go? |
